Keep Awake

Support

Click the cup in the menu bar to open Keep Awake. The top line always says what it is doing now.

The modes

Until further notice
Click it once. The Mac stays awake until you choose Off.
Until a time
Choose an hour and minutes. If the time has passed today, it means tomorrow. The app shows the result, such as "Awake until Tue 18:30".
For a while
Pick 30 minutes, 1, 2, 4 or 8 hours.
Until an app quits
Choose an open app from the list. When you quit that app, your Mac can sleep again.
Off
Ends any hold straight away.

Closing the lid

Keep Awake stops your Mac falling asleep because nobody is touching it. It does not stop a MacBook sleeping when you close the lid. That is decided by macOS, and it is the safe choice for a laptop in a bag.

Allow on battery

This switch is off to begin with. While it is off and you unplug a MacBook, Keep Awake pauses so it does not drain the battery. The menu shows "Paused — on battery", and the hold carries on by itself when you plug back in. Turn the switch on if you want it to keep going on battery. A Mac without a battery does not show this switch.

Questions

Will my screen stay on?

Only if "Keep screen on too" is switched on. Otherwise the Mac stays awake but the screen can dim and turn off as usual.

Does it remember after a restart?

Yes. If a hold is still due to run, it carries on when the app opens again. Turn on "Start at login" so it opens by itself.

What happens when the Mac wakes after a timed hold has passed?

The app checks the time on waking. If the hold should already have ended, it ends it and lets the Mac sleep normally.

How do I know it is on?

The cup in the menu bar is filled in while it is keeping your Mac awake, and empty when it is off.

Does it use the internet or collect anything?

No. It works entirely on your Mac. See the privacy policy.

How do I remove it?

Choose Quit from its panel, then drag Keep Awake from Applications to the Bin. If you turned on "Start at login", it is removed from your login items too.
